A BRIEF HIS-TEA-RY
Tea, from the Camellia Sinesis plant, is the world’s most consumed drink after water. Originating as far back as 5,000 years ago in China, tea was subsequently introduced to the Cameron Highlands in 1929 by J.A. Russell. At 5,000 ft above sea level, the region boasts a cool climate, high rainfall, fertile slopes, and mildly acidic soil uniquely suited for tea production of distinctive character.
Beyond a beverage, tea has numerous known published health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and liver protection properties, and holds heritage culture and livelihood significance.

Tea as a perennial crop also has a low environmental impact compared to other commercial crops, and BOH estate planted areas have not increased since the 1970s.

Today, BOH celebrates our 95th anniversary as the largest producer of tea in malaysia, accounting for 70% of total production and serving 5 million cups of tea daily. The company is vertically integrated so the tea is fresh from ‘tea bush to tea cup’ and recognises the importance of
biodiversity conservation and nature-based solutions.

45% of our land in the highlands is preserved as forests,
to maintain biodiversity and soil integrity, and allow visitors to experience the unique rainforest of the Cameron Highlands. While the planted trees are maintained, BOH continues to expand our sustainability efforts and operations from integrated pest management to
renewable energy, sustainable sourcing, community education, and wellness.
The language and public discourse of sustainability have modernised, but sustainability has been at the heart of BOH from the offset. As agriculturalists, there are no shortcuts, and each action is taken to balance present needs with the needs of future generations, from the early setting aside of biodiversity areas to our present
95 years of passionate tea crafting.
Tristan’s visionary leadership guides us to always look to the future
and to be mindful of developing connections between our agricultural practices and the well-being of Mother Earth. Similarly, our products must contribute to the health of our communities.
Sustainable governance has always been the key to managing all three aspects of the planet, people and product. We proudly continue Tristan’s legacy to meet the challenges of tomorrow and uphold our promise to deliver quality teas and Ummph! moments to everyone who has made this possible.
Brewing for Tomorrow, today.
